All reviews are my own opinion and take into account the needs of my family of two special needs children, the time of year we visited the place, the weather and how our day turned out.  Wheelchair access is of particular importance for us so please take this into account on my reviews.

Castles

Beaumaris Castle Anglesey

Penrhyn Castle

If you drive from Anglesey down the A55 and go to the junction just beyond Bangor you will come to Penrhyn Castle.  A National Trust owned property the castle is typical of a 1800's castle but designed like a palace.  The building is vast with lots of stone carvings throughout.  Plenty of period equipment, friendly staff and looks like a good cafe.  There is also a train museum with plenty of examples of trains throughout the ages.  We did not wander too far in the grounds as we only made it to the adventure playground, which is good for able bodied children.  There is also a walled garden and plenty of woodland to wander round.  We spent about 2 hours at the castle but it could easily have been 3 hours.   Well worth a visit, especially if the weather is damp as most of the visit can be based under a roof.

Caernarfon Castle

Good castle for children to explore.  Not too bad for disabled but is very limited access.  It is free for disabled + carer so will keep everyone busy for 30 minutes.

Lighthouses

South Stack

Looks very impressive from the top of the cliff but unfortunately not accessible with a buggy or wheelchair.  A very steep climb down.

Beaches

Newborough

This is a beautiful beach which is accessed from within Newborough Forest, which in itself is a well kept and excellent forest for a picnic.  The beach is golden sands with a two mile walk west to some ruins, a lookout tower and some volcanic rock. 9/10 because no coffee Shop but it does have a toilet in the main carpark.

Benllech

Nice beach with easy access for wheelchair.  Clean sand with some small cliffs to explore with the kids.  Beach cafe, shop and toilets on the beach front. 9/10

Moelfre

Small village with a nice pub and cafe.  Beach is small and pebbled but very sheltered so a good place when the wind is blowing southernly.  You can go for a walk on the coat path and discovery other sandy beaches. 8/10

Cemaes Bay

Small village with a clean sandy, pebbles, rocky beach.  This is very sheltered bay with crystal clear water.  Small habour with a few pubs and shops in the village.  Cafe on the beach.  Disabled parking is free on the east side of the beach which is access through Llanbadrig village 9/10

Amlwch

A port town with little offering the tourist, we stayed about 5 minutes. 1/10

Beaumaris

Large village with a plenty of shops, cafes and pubs.  Beach has small pier with both sand and pebbles to explore

Rhosneigr

Small village with plenty of pubs and cafes.  Beach is famous for its shore break so full of windsurfers and kitesurfers.  Beach is crest shaped and accessible straight from the road. 8/10.

Malltraeth Sands

A bay that gets flooded at high tide so may be sailable

Trearddur Beach

Very sheltered bay so will make a very safe watersports location, near to Holyhead.  Vast expanse of sand with a number of small shops, pubs and ice cream vans.  Excellent access to the beach with ramps for wheelchairs, boat trailers.  People can drive onto the beach to drop-off their boats.  Bay is very sheltered and excellent for safe water sports as the rocks hide the open sea.  Really good find 9/10

Red Wharf Bay

About 3 miles East of Benllech the beach has two excellent pubs/restaurants with a very sheltered bay of pebbles and sand.  Looks like a good location of sailing in northernly winds so they would be onshore.  Parking is limited with the largest car park belonging to the pub so you would have to have a drink or food, oh the hardships!

Camping & Caravan

Nant Newydd

Excellent site which is very clean, has two play areas, football pitch, tennis courts, heated swimming pool, teenage room, animals and just over half a mile to the local pub.

Villages

Llangefni Village

Small village with a good range of small shops: bakers, butchers, large Asda store, pubs, lots of takeouts (chinese, indian, English chippy, kebabs etc...)

Pubs

Moelfe - Oak Lodge Inn

A nice pleasant pub with great views of the bay, which is just outside the front door.  Food is good quality and typical pub grub.   A nice pub to relax and eat.

Red Wharf Bay - Ship Inn

Excellent food all locally sourced.  More expensive than normal but well worth the money as the quality is so high.  I would rate this at 10/10 for pub food.  I had one of the best sirloins steaks I've ever had and the toffee sponge is mouth watering.  The location is beautiful with the pub set on the beach with beer garden, sailing boats, woodland bay, it is picture postcard.  Beer is good as well!

Red Wharf Bay - The Old Boat House/Upstairs at the boat house

A small cafe with a restuarant above.  Called in at lunch time and food is local and excellent.  A cheaper alternative to the Ship Inn, you won't be disappointed.  Cakes are excellent!

Children's Days Out

Pilipalas Butterfly Park

A day out at Pili Palas can be a magical experience for all the family whatever the weather!

So come along – enter a steamy environment full of lush vegetation and waterfalls with LIVE butterflies flying all around you. This is the magical world of Pili Palas.

After your encounter with the butterflies and birds, move on to the reptile house and forget about the myths and discover the reality of the snake world. Next door at lizard land you’ll come face to face with iguana, dragons, tegu and monitor lizards from around the world. In our learning zone we have an entertaining 20 minute DVD running all day on the life cycle of the butterfly. Then we dare you to visit the tropical lair of tarantulas, scorpions, fire bellied toads and hissing cockroaches. Don’t forget pets corner where you can meet the rabbits, guinea pigs and Degus. The latest attraction at Pili Palas is our farm yard where our pygmy goats Milly, Molly and her baby Percy live happily with the peacocks and silkie hens.

Toddlers can let off steam in our indoor play area - while older children can play on our giant Bouncy Castle or tackle our adventure playground. Kids can also have hours of fun in Lenny’s Castle in the park

Don’t leave without finding all the hidden creatures on our nature trail where you will also meet our shetland ponies Maisie and Abbey with her foal Barney. At the end of the Nature Trail is our new native butterfly garden full of wild. 7/10. (2 hours)

Foel Farm

A really nice day out on the farm.  Includes a tractor ride, quad biker trailer ride for the more adventurous children, Giant bouncy sleeping pillow, toy tractors, lots of animals to feed, horse rides, great food at at cafe, chocolate shop, sand pit and animal walk.  A great place for about 3 hours and reasonably sheltered on windy days.  Staff very friendly and really appreciate the needs of the disabled.  Tractor driver even let the children sit in the tractor.

Countryside

Snowdown Mountain Railway

Spectacular views as you ascend the mountain.  45 minutes to the 3/4 point, 30 minute wait and then return.  You can climb to the peak in about 60 minutes.  You cannot take buggies up in the train so I wouldn't be taking our children.  £16 adult return

The Dingle Woods in Llangefni

Nice woodland walk on a raised boardwalk from the centre of Llangefni. Very accessible 8/10

Abersoch Beach/Village

Good range of cafes/restaurants.  Nice beach which is more easily accessible from the quiet and free west side car park.

Lamberis

Lamberis has plenty to offer but for a couple of hours you can play in the children's park and walk along the lake for free (after paying parking fee!)
